🏆 Declan's Comeback: From Bullied & Burned Out to Confident, Capable, and Ahead of the Curve

Declan during our Algebra 2 Zoom sessions, Fall 2024.
When I first met Declan, it wasn’t just math that was falling apart.
He was being bullied at school. His grades had dropped. His self-esteem was at an all-time low.
His parents reached out to me knowing he needed more than a tutor — he needed someone who could help him rebuild.
🛠️ Rebuilding Starts with Trust
We began working together over Zoom in spring of 2023, three hours a week. At that point, he was finishing up a rough year in math — Algebra 1 was overwhelming, and the school environment wasn’t helping.
Our early sessions weren’t about racing ahead — they were about slowing down, breathing, and creating a space where Declan felt safe enough to try again.
His confidence started to return. His parents saw it. So did I.
🏡 A Bold Move: Homeschooling
That summer, his parents made a life-changing decision: they pulled Declan out of school and started homeschooling him full-time.
I became his math teacher.
We met three hours a week, every week, and completed a full year of Algebra 1 together — just him and me, building clarity and confidence from the ground up.
By the end of that year, Declan was a different student.
So we kept going.
🚀 Finishing Algebra 2 in 4–5 Months
In fall of 2024, Declan’s parents asked me to continue with him into Algebra 2.
We bumped up to six hours per week, and Declan took off. With no classroom pressure, no distractions, and a system that finally made sense to him, he completed an entire year of Algebra 2 in just 4 to 5 months.
That’s not an exaggeration.
That’s what can happen when a student is given the right environment and the right guidance.
🏫 Back to School — And Thriving
In January 2025, Declan re-entered traditional high school.
His parents were nervous. Was he ready? Would it all fall apart again?
It didn’t.
Instead, he earned an A in his math class.
His parents were overjoyed. They told me I hadn’t just helped their son learn math — I’d helped give him his confidence back.
❤️ Why Declan's Story Matters
Because not every student is just “bad at math.”
Some are overwhelmed. Some are scared. Some need more time, more attention, or simply someone who believes in them.
Declan’s story is proof that a student can go from shut down to soaring — with the right support, and a little bit of faith.
